Algeria Moves to Expand Death Penalty Over Serious Arson Offences
The Algerian lower house of parliament has voted to amend the penal code to allow the death penalty for individuals convicted of arson that threatens public security, national unity, or economic and environmental stability. Proposed by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune following fatal wildfires in September 2026, the law now moves to the upper house for review, though human rights groups have strongly condemned the measure as a regressive step that could be weaponized against political dissent despite Algeria's decades-long moratorium on executions.
